Activities
Environment & Walks
There is a waymarked walk from Gearrannan to Dalmore Beach and onwards to Dalbeg Beach. The walk is approximately 6 km / 4 miles and can be completed in less than 3 hours. The terrain is moorland and as such good footwear and clothing are required, but the walk is not too difficult for people who are in good health.
Archaeology
The west side of Lewis is rich in history and archaeology, from the older-than-Stonehenge Callanish Standing Stones, to the Iron Age broch at Doune Carloway to the “Norse” mill at Shawbost – and many other sites worth visiting. Gearrannan is placed centrally to these and is an ideal base from which to set off on your journeys through history.
Fishing
Carloway Angling Club can provide fishing passes for river and loch fishing within three miles of Gearrannan. If you are lucky, you may hook a fresh Atlantic salmon, but you don’t need to aspire to these heights – there are numerous lochs in Lewis that are home to healthy and tasty brown trout.
The seas around Gearrannan and Loch Carloway have always been fished. In summertime, it may be possible to arrange a fishing trip through Stornoway Sea Angling Club.
For a different experience on the water, SeaTrek Tours offer exhilarating boat trips along the Atlantic coast, giving visitors the chance to explore sea caves, dramatic cliffs and local wildlife.
Kayaking
Explore the coastline of Gearrannan from a completely different perspective with an unforgettable sea kayaking experience. Paddling along the Atlantic edge, you’ll discover hidden inlets, dramatic cliffs and quiet sandy coves that can only truly be appreciated from the water. The ever-changing light, fresh sea air and sense of space make this a peaceful yet exhilarating way to experience the west coast of Lewis.
Beaches & Surfing
We have two beaches within four miles of Gearrannan . One of these, Dalmore Beach, as well as being a great place to visit, is a must for experienced surfers. Dalbeg beach, further to the north, is smaller but its environs are particularly attractive. Children will love these clean beaches, adults will become children!
Ideal cycling country!
Lewis has many quiet roads which make cycling a pleasure. The 18 miles of the single track Pentland Road from Carloway to Stornoway is very popular with cyclists. You can get open views of moorland and hills, the road is relatively flat, and there are few cars to bother you. Bicycles are available for hire in Stornoway, but maybe you should come on your bike – or at least strap it to the top of your car!
